In 1971, art historian Linda Nochlin posed a disarmingly simple question in her groundbreaking essay: Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? Rather than asking why women had not achieved greatness, she exposed the numerous institutional barriers in their way, shifting the focus from individual achievement to systemic exclusion. Barred from academies, denied access to formal training, and often dismissed by critics, women artists were historically left to create in the margins, their work frequently attributed to male relatives or overlooked altogether. Others achieved fleeting acclaim only to be written out of history in the years that followed. Today, many of these talented figures are steadily reclaiming their rightful place in the story of art and, in doing so, reshaping the canon.
