Abstraction In Creation – Watch Gerhard Richter At Work

Gerhard Richter is a German visual artist who was born in 1932. He produces abstract and photorealistic paintings. In October 2012, Richter’s Abstraktes Bild set an auction record price for a painting by a living artist at $34 million.

Today we want to show you, how Gerhard Richter’s creative process looks like.  In 1969, Richter produced the first of a group of grey monochromes that consist exclusively of the textures resulting from different methods of paint application. This is how he is creating his abstract pictures until this day. Richter builds up cumulative layers, beginning with brushing big swaths of primary color onto canvas. The paintings evolve in stages, based on the incidental details and patterns that emerge. The painter uses also blurring and scraping to veil and expose prior layers.
