Artist and writer Juliette Aristides delves into the innermost workings of an artist’s mind, heart, and soul in her newest book, The Inner Life of the Artist. In the same vein of Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, Aristides argues that inspiration is informed by daily practices.
Slowing down to appreciate the present is the core idea behind this artist’s handbook. With masterfully woven reflections, this book is recommended to all creatives who desire to take a broader approach to making meaningful art in this technological, postmodern world.

Juliette Aristides is a Seattle-based painter and writer. Her art has been featured in numerous galleries and publications. For over two decades, she has been teaching at the Aristides Atelier, where she focuses on realistic art. The Inner Life of the Artist is her 7th book.
Juliette Aristides’ whimsical meditations on beauty and inspiration in The Inner Life of the Artist somehow read as both effortless and deeply cerebral. It is clear that Aristides has the disposition of a dreamer; however, the book testifies that she is able to ground herself in reality as necessary to accomplish her goals and creative visions. Aristides generously provides a wealth of suggestions on how to make your dreams reality in practical, actionable steps. This concise text is packed with useful information, and it is an immensely enjoyable read. Visually, the publication’s presentation is a delight, with glorious and unexpected illustrations.

All creatives know and understand two major struggles that are the primary focuses of Aristides in this book. The first struggle is that of making real or tangible the glorious visions in our minds. Articulating our deepest creative desires and actually producing what we deem accomplished artworks remain significant deterrents to the act of creating.
But what if you are unable to generate original or compelling artistic ideas? It is this initial artist’s block that Aristides provides the tools to overcome in The Inner Life of the Artist. This book offers fresh perspectives that are deeply rooted in tradition. Casting back to a number of great thinkers and creators, Aristides argues for the relevance of long-standing paths to inspiration and creation that others would deem old-fashioned, passé, and in so doing, are missing the opportunity for transformation and elevation as artists.
I choose to live my own life, think my own thoughts, and make my own mistakes.

Aristides’ approaches refreshingly emphasize the importance of developing our own ideas instead of relying on the plethora of technological tools that will do the work for us. It is reality, in fact, to which Aristides wishes to draw our attention. Our day-to-day is where she believes we will encounter true beauty, from which the wells of artistic inspiration will flow.
“Most of my experiences of beauty are not in a museum, cathedral, or concert hall,” she writes. “They are very small points of heightened awareness” (“Wayside Sacrament”).
Look around you. Notice what is in front of you, what you can see, touch, smell, and feel. Let go of the distraction of screens, and in this time of liberation for the senses, let your imagination run wild.
To see the world through the eyes of such artistic talent as Juliette Aristides is a gift. It is not often that such genius as this exists, and it is even rarer for the genius to share their secrets for success. In The Inner Life of the Artist, you will be immersed in her lyrical writing, absorbed by her storytelling, and inspired to absorb and create with renewed passion. Your perspective will shift, and your senses will open up to the world around you in a way they never have before. Read and see how both you and your art will be transformed.
