Beauty thr-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, “Art is long, and time is fleeting.” This sentiment seems almost to have been written to express the idea of hanami, or flower viewing. For two weeks every Spring, the sakura trees, cherry blossoms, flower in a riot of pink, only to fade as quickly as they bloomed. Despite this brevity—or maybe because of it—the spectacle attracts thousands of visitors year after year in Japan, and also in major cities across the world like Paris, São Paulo, Vancouver, Taipei, London, and even Washington DC. What is it that has been bringing people out since the 800s to sit under the cherry blossoms?
