The appeal of characters such as Hamlet, Rosalind, Falstaff, Romeo and Juliet, continues undiminished into the present, partly because these stories touch something universal in each of us. These tales of people, as they really are, struck a cord with the pre-Raphaelite painters who were seeking to speak truth through their art. The movement’s founder, John Everett Millais, went to Shakespeare for inspiration over and over again. Read on for stories of Shakespeare characters in Millais’ paintings.</p>
