Welcome to a special celebration of early modern women painters (though, in truth, we celebrate remarkable female artists every day!). The early modern period, which lasted from roughly 1500-1800, was a great time for European art, but maybe not such a great time to be a female artist. Not many opportunities were available for training since most art academies excluded women, and female professionals in any field were rare. However, an impressive number of women succeeded in this man’s world.
How well do you actually know these artists? It’s time to find out. After you’re done, you can read more about each woman mentioned in this quiz right here at DailyArt Magazine.
This Italian woman is sometimes credited as one of the first artists to practice still-life painting. Who is she?
